In this 4 days tour, we offer to you to discover the Minangkabau lands and the great diversity of its landscapes (volcanoes, canyon, lake, lush valley…), through a cultural trip combining crafts, traditional architecture and local food.

Discovery Tour & Trek

6 days / 6 nights

This tour offers you an additional 2 days trek in the rainforest.

DESCRIPTION "DISCOVERY TOUR"
DAY 1

BUKITTINGGI

  • Departure from Padang (city / airport) at 9.00am or from Rimba Ecolodge at 9.00am.
  • Lunch in Bukittinggi.
  • Discovery of the city: The big clock (Jam Gadang) built by the Dutch, and on which was added a Minang style roof by the inhabitants of Bukittinggi following the country’s independence ; the market (Pasar atas) offering dozens of varieties of “traditional crisps” (krupuk) which make the city’s reputation ; and finally the Panorama Park which offers the best view of the Sianok Canyon and allows the observation of the giant bats that come out of their hiding place at sunset to reach the surrounding forests.
  • Dinner and overnight in Bukittinggi.

(Occasional program : discovery of the Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, in nature reserve of Palupuh)

DAY 2

MINANGKABAU CULTURAL HERITAGE

  • After breakfast, depart for the city of Koto Gadang, famous for its work in silver filigree and its hand embroideries.
  • The village of Aia Angek located on the slopes of Mount Merapi offers beautiful views of different plantations.
  • The old Surau of Batipuah and its typical Minangkabau architecture. In the past, who reaches middle age and still single slept in these Surau where Islam was taught to them.
  • Lunch at Singarak lake .
  • Visit the oldest traditional Minangkabau house (350 years !) in the village of Balimbing.
  • Visit the Royal Palace of Pagaruyung and back to Bukittinggi.
  • Dinner and overnight in Bukittinggi
DAY 3

HARAU VALLEY

  • After breakfast, depart for Harau valley.
  • On the road, stop at the view point of Tabek Patah to enjoy the panorama while sampling some local coffee.
  • Lunch in the valley.
  • Explore the valley and its waterfalls.
  • Dinner and overnight in the valley.
DAY 4

MANINJAU LAKE

  • After breakfast, depart for Maninjau lake.
  • Enjoy the view of the green slopes of the Singgalang volcano from Sungai Landia.
  • Stop in Lawang Top to admire the wonderfull view of Maninjau lake, then descent into the crater to reach the lake via the famous “44 bends” road !
  • Lunch at the lake.
  • Bathing, walking around the lake or have a rest, it’s up to you !
  • Dinner and overnight at Maninjau lake.
DAY 5
TRIP BACK to PADANG (city/airport) or to RIMBA ECOLODGE

Meet the Mentawai Tribes

Stays starting from 4 days/3 nights

Go and meet with Mentawai people in the heart of the National Park of Siberut Island. Enter in a Mentawai community will give you the impression that time has stopped among this people who never left his native forest. Off the beaten track, we invite you to discover this mysterious people, joining different families in their Uma (traditional house) through forest trips, by canoe and by foot. They will share with you their knowledge of the forest, their traditions and lifestyle. You will be initiate into traditional fishing in the river, harvesting sago (heart of palm tree) or bring your own creations by learning to make traditional clothing from plants, such as the Mentawai still wear them today … One thing is sure, this exceptional meeting will not leave you indifferent !
OUR CODE OF ETHICS

We are always working with local guides from the clans to whom we visit and we guarantee a fair wage to them.
We visit only the clans eager to welcome us in order to not impose them our presence.
We go in several clans at random, in order not to favour one clan more than the others and ensure equity between clans.
We don’t bring groups exceeding 8 people in order to not disrupt the lives and habits of the clan.
DESCRIPTION OF A 4 DAYS TRIP
Exemple for a program of a 4 days/3 nights trip with a return trip by ferry
DAY 1

Departure by night ferry from the port of Bungus to Siberut island.

DAY 2

Arrival on Siberut island in the morning. Departure by motorbike or car to reach the river in Muntei village and then 1 hour canoe. Finally, walk of 30 min to 1 hour in the forest to reach one the clans. Meet the inhabitants, visit of the Uma (traditional house) and first activities.

DAYS 3-5

Initiation and participation in daily activities that punctuate the life of the Mentawai (fishing, hunting, harvesting and preparation of sago, cooking, preparation of poison, making clothes, jewelry, utensils …).

DAY 5

Trip back to the port of Muara Siberut (depart from the clan around 02.00 pm) and departure to Sumatra.

DAY 6
Arrival in Bungus in the morning.

SCHEDULE
We offer excursions of 4 days/3 nights, 5 days/4 nights, 6 days/5 nights et 8 days/7 nights on site. You should count on 2 days more for the transfer Sumatra – Mentawai – Sumatra.
Excursions of 6 days/5 nights and 8 days/7 nights allowing for more flexibility, we organize them according to your expectations, with routes more and less long and varying trek levels ranging from the easiest to the more challenging depending on the reached ethnic groups.

GOOD TO KNOW

The Mentawai traditional communities living in remote areas of the forest. Access to these communities is not simple and the tours we offer are not easy.

You should also be aware that sharing a piece of lives of Mentawai people means to accept living in the same conditions as them, namely in a very rudimentary comfort (sleeping on the floor, neither running water nor electricity …).

It is also strongly advised to take preventive treatment against malaria (See the section “Health and Safety“).

Make sure you have a flashlight or a headlamp, a cream or a spray for mosquito, a sleeping sheet or a sleeping bag (the nights are cool), hiking shoes.
